I Choose my dream. Not yours.

I wanted to prove that I could. For all the people who wanted to be in my position, but never saw themselves. I hated being the only black person in class. I hated forcing myself to learn material that I couldn't care less about. I hated dealing with the pressure of having to repay my parents. Why is that my problem?

I never liked ____.

I never liked a lot of things.

I just wanted to be good enough to get the opportunity. Wanted to prove to all the white and asian people here that I was just as good as them. I tried to ignore the stares or how every time I spoke directly at people or tried to be friendly, they looked away like I didn't exist. If the desire for money does this to people, I want no part of it. I'd rather live the rest of my life poor if the desire for wealth makes people this evil.

I keep getting told that my mom sacrificed so much for me to have this education like it was my choice to be here or to deal with these expectations. It's not my responsibility to ease other people's doubts or thoughts of regret.

I set the standard for myself.

I don't care if your sacrifice is only worth it if I have to suffer. I don't care if this makes me sound selfish. If I live my life for you, I am already dead.

Who are you living for?
